Movie Trailer of the Day: I’m really very meh about Friends with Kids.
Yes, it stars Adam Scott, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Jon Hamm, Chris O’Dowd, Ed Burns, and Jennifer Westfeldt. But it’s also pretty much the same movie Hollywood has been making since ZaSu Pitts first put on too much Pan-Cake.
There is a silver lining here: The trailer gives so much of the film away that by the end you’ll either want to spend hard-earned money on the filler in between the stuff you just saw, or you’ll have seen enough to know that as great as these actors are in other things, everyone deserves a day off.
I am so ready for Christmas right now (I imagine the closer it gets the less spirited I will be…..so I might as well enjoy it while I can….work is only going to get crazier as the holidays near)
Last night I went to a screening of Captain America: The First Avenger in Coral Gables (courtesy of my local Dunkin’ Donuts). First, let me say how awesome it was to go to a movie screening again. In NYC, they were a dime a dozen. Since moving down two years ago I have yet to see a movie ahead of it’s release date. It’s amazing that the fact that I get to see a movie mere days before everyone else brings me such joy (that and the fact that I save myself $11). Of course, I had to drive all the way down to Coral Gables (DURING RUSH HOUR) for it, but it was worth it.
Truth be told, I’ve never been as familiar with Marvel Comics characters and stories like I am with DC. Maybe that has to do with the fact that my dad was more of a DC kid and passed it onto me. Whatever the case, it did give me a unique movie going experience as I really didn’t know much about it and I think that helped me enjoy it more. All in all, the movie is a great first movie and does an awesome job of introducing the character to movie-goers before The Avengers comes out next year. I will have to tip my hat to Marvel for actually executing their recent movies so well with the intertwining of characters in movies to perfectly set up for The Avengers. With the exception of Batman and maybe Superman, DC isn’t really doing so well with their movies and I don’t foresee a Justice League movie in the near future.
So enough nerd talk. Bottom Line: Captain America really is an enjoyable movie. Comic book fans will love it. Girls will love it (Chris Evans, Dominic Cooper, and Sebastian Stan make for good eye candy). It’s cleverly written and casted perfectly. My only negative is that the 3D isn’t necessary. If you can, just go see it in 2D and save yourself the extra few dollars to spend on some popcorn.
Side note: They told us to wait after the credits for a “surprise”— don’t. There aren’t any extra scenes (like they did in Iron Man and Hulk). Just some simple text that says “Captain America will return in The Avengers in 2012”. No, that’s not a spoiler. You can go on IMDB and see that.
UPDATE: Apparently they were supposed to show some sort of Avengers related content after the movie, but it wasn’t working (typical). So, DO stay in your seats and let me know!
This Is The House From “The Royal Tenenbaums.” The folks at the AV Club took this video tour of the Manhattan mansion where Wes Anderson filmed “The Royal Tenenbaums,” a house the director thought only existed in his imagination until he saw it live in person. So here we have an instance of a real house evoking the fictional ideal of a real place without actually representing the REALITY of that real place. There’s Excedrin in the medicine cabinet if you need it.
In the new trailer for Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, we learn that no less than the Kremlin has gone kablooey. The fallout? As a grim-faced Tom Wilkinson explains, “The president has initiated ‘ghost protocol,’” meaning every single IMF agent everywhere has been disavowed. Burn.
Roles of Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy Revealed in ‘Dark Knight Rises’
Batman has found a nemesis for his next cinematic adventure – and it looks like a love interest, too. On Wednesday, Warner Brothers Pictures announced a new cast member and clarified the role of another for “The Dark Knight Rises,” the third Batman movie to be directed by Christopher Nolan, the “Inception” and “Memento” filmmaker. Joining Christian Bale, who returns as Batman and his daytime alter ego, Bruce Wayne, is Anne Hathaway (of “Love and Other Drugs”) who will play Selina Kyle; the film will also feature Tom Hardy, a co-star of “Inception,” as a villain named Bane.
As comic-book fans know, the Selina Kyle character is the secret identity of Batman’s sometime paramour (and sometime foe) Catwoman, and Bane is a muscular bad guy powered by an addictive drug called Venom. But a news release from Warner Brothers gave no descriptions of how these characters would be utilized in Mr. Nolan’s film; Mr. Nolan said in a statement only that Ms. Hathaway was “a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story” and that he was “delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”
“The Dark Knight Rises” is planned to be released on July 20, 2012, with a screenplay by Mr. Nolan and his brother, Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer.

I actually think this looks very promising, but the special effects need a good deal of work to be believable and the suit could be smoothed out a bit. Other than those (sorta major) problems, the movie has potential!
“Green Lantern trailer” are the best three words since “Gray’s Sports Almanac”.
Directed by Zack Snyder. With John Hamm, Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, and Jaime Chung.
This trailer is kind of nuts. And only slightly in the good way. Just because 300 was a surprise smash in March doesn’t mean every graphic novel transfer is going to work, especially at that time of the year. And still this has an appeal, a post-modern, Moulin Rouge meets Kill Bill appeal, and I can dig it.
HOLY SHIT! INSANE! BROWNING!
This trailer needs more Jon Hamm. Also, Hamm + Browning together again? Sweet.
What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?
ok, so i know i’m totally late to the party on this, but i finally got around to watching an education tonight. i don’t know why, but i’ve always loved coming of age stories, and this one was fantastic. after watching it, i had no idea the screenplay was adapted from an autobiographical essay (later published into a book). and besides the fact that i loved the fashion in this movie, carey mulligan and peter sarsgaard were amazing in it. in my top 5 movies of 2009 for sure.
