Best of 2011 according to-- Spotify

Ok, ok. So this isn’t really a “best of” list as much as it is a “most played” list. Spotify released it’s list of most played songs this year, and most (if not all) are no surprise. Basically if you heard it on the radio or in a commercial or a movie trailer…it’s in this list.

Which made me think of some of my favorites of the year. Don’t laugh. I always feel vulnerable when putting my musical tastes out THERE. But alas, I basically lifecast everything else, so what’s a list of a few favorite songs on some random Tumblr.

In no particular order:

Lana Del Rey- “Video Games” (thanks for alerting me to this @unclegrambo)
Adele- “Someone Like You” (if this didn’t tug at your heart strings…)
David Guetta f/Usher- “Without You” (love the video)
Lady Gaga- “You and I” (sounds like a country song without being country)
Coldplay- “Paradise” (this song grew on me after the Howard Stern interview)
Kings of Leon- “The End” (just ‘cause)
Teddy Thompson- “Take Care of Yourself” (beautiful, beautiful song)
Rihanna- “Only Girl (In the World)” (might have played this 1,000 times while running)
Bruno Mars- “Grenade” (just love his soulful voice)
Robert Schwartzman- “Out of My Mind” (I will always have a soft spot for this guy)
Matt & Kim- “Daylight” (one of my favorite concerts this year)

Larry Mullen, Jr = SWOON. I’m still on a U2 high from last week’s concert. Even though they didn’t play this tune last week (they only played it three times during the 360 Tour…on their European leg no less), I have always LOOOOOVED this song. And the video is sexy is hell (co-starring Samantha Morton)! What I wouldn’t give to be her in this video.

Isn’t it funny how you can hear a song and it transports you to another time? I heard this song earlier today and I can remember listening to it in my Queens apartment (summer of ‘02, I believe) after my friend Courtney recommended it to me. I think she was doing promotion for The Fader back then. Either way, this Zero 7 song is so beautiful. It’s been on repeat tonight.

Just Another Reason Why U2 is Number One in My Book

Most every show on U2’s 360 world tour has ended with “Moment Of Surrender,” but before walking offstage last night in Nashville Bono saw a blind fan upfront holding up a sign saying he wanted to play a song for his wife. “What do you want to play?” Bono said to him. “Get a guitar for this dude. Gents, we have a surprise guest.” The man said he was really nervous, but once handed Bono’s acoustic guitar he began playing “All I Want Is You.” It started with just Bono on vocals, but soon enough the entire band joined in for a moment the man is unlikely to ever forget. When it was all done, Bono even gave him the guitar.

Click on the link to see video. I mean, C’MON. This band is the best. Side note: This should be the last of my U2 posts for a while…I think. No promises.

U2 360° Tour…Words Can’t Describe the Awesomeness (But I’ll Try Anyway)

When I die and go to heaven (hopefully), I won’t be greeted by sounds of a stupid harp, but instead the musical stylings of U2.

My friend and I got a spot right in the front (on the outer circle) at 5:30pm. We were in it for the long haul. This would mean about 6 hours of standing for the rest of the night. Luckily, Florence and the Machine was the opening act and we were thoroughly entertained. They put on a great show and Florence Welch definitely has a stage presence. Unfortunately, her stage presence is no match for the monstrous stage that U2 has, so it’s kind of lost on the crowd. I would’ve loved to have seen her band in a more intimate venue (a football stadium isn’t exactly the ideal locale).

Then came the band everyone was waiting for…U2! The lights went down and the stage lit up and all of a sudden, the band was on the screen with a camera following them out from the backstage area to the main stage, all while “Space Oddity” was playing in the background, counting down for them to take the stage.

They kicked it off with “Even Better than the Real Thing”. You can find the set list here, but all in all, they played almost all their hits with a nice mix of newer stuff. It really is amazing when a band can consistently have 72,000 fans fill up a venue to hear them play music for the last 30 years. And as big and overwhelming a stadium can be, U2 always knows how to make it feel like an intimate night with their fans.

New Obsession: The Boxer Rebellion

At the risk of “discovering” a band that everyone knows about already, I’m going to say I am OBSESSED with The Boxer Rebellion. How did I not know about this band before? Granted, they’re a UK band and it looks like they haven’t played any US dates in a while. If I tell you how I found out about this band, you’ll clearly laugh at me. At the risk of being mocked, here it goes. I DVRed Going the Distance on HBO this weekend (yes, the Justin Long/Drew Barrymore movie) and The Boxer Rebellion performed at a rock club in one of the scenes. After looking up their website and listening to their music on Grooveshark, I am officially a fan. So much that I saw that they are playing this music festival in Mexico City and I DESPERATELY WANT TO GO.

All these bands (plus The Boxer Rebellion) for only $65! I looked up flights and they are a hefty $680. So, the probability of me going diminished greatly, but a girl can dream, right?

Kickass Cover of the Day: Fusing together 36 separate YouTube covers of Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android,” Ohadi Amram created a synergistic cover that is far beyond the sum of its parts.

Last weekend my friend and I skipped out on the NBA Finals and our Sunday night tradition of The Killing to go see Matt & Kim and The Thermals play at Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale. Don’t get me wrong, they put on a helluva show, but as a Mavericks fan in the middle of a Heat Nation, and with The Killing so close to an end, I was a little conflicted when we were driving over there. (Almost) All of that went away when we got there and got a few beers and listened to some fun party rock dance music. If you haven’t already seen them live, pay the $20 bucks and run to their next show.

It’s Record Store Day!

What is Record Store Day, you ask? Well, here’s the official answer:

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April.

So basically it’s a fun day for people to celebrate music and to support local businesses. To find your local participating music store, click here. If you live in SoFla (like I do), here’s a few places you might want to check out:

Radio-Active Records- Fort Lauderdale
Kelly’s Klassics- Fort Lauderdale
Sweat Records- Miami
Yesterday and Today Records- Miami
Selected Records- Miami Beach
VP Records Retail- Miramar
we-got-the-beats- Oakland Park
The Record Rack- Pompano Beach
Music Movies and More- West Palm Beach

Unrelated, today is also FourSquare Day! You can find a list of local meetups here.

Maybe the answer is really obvious, but how in the hell are The Strokes going to play opposite coasts on the same day?

All sorts of NO. I made the mistake of previewing the song on iTunes and it sounds like a sappy American Idol winner song. Ugh, I should’ve known better after last night’s cover of “Kiss” on Glee.
